Session 1: A New Take on Disability

Wednesday, May 19, 2021

4:30 - 5:30pm EST

Art sparks ideas.
Art sparks imagination.
Art sparks change.

Art SPARKS is a BEING Studio community learning series. Five sessions led by five special guests. BEING artists, families, staff, and board members are invited!

During session 1, join artist Aislinn Thomas to learn about how people are thinking differently about disability. Together we will learn about Disability Justice and how we can build a better world.

How do people think about disability?
What are advocates teaching us about disability?
How can we embrace disability?

About the presenter:

Aislinn Thomas is an artist who makes many different types of art.  Her artwork is about her everyday experiences and relationships. Her art projects are sometimes serious, sometimes silly, and often both. She often makes artwork about accessibility. To Aislinn, making something accessible is a creative process. Aislinn is working with and learning from other artists who are making artwork about accessibility. Aislinn has had exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and in Europe. Aislinn is a white, disabled woman. She is grateful to live on the ancestral and unsurrendered territory of the Mi’kmaq people in Unama'ki, also known as Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.

ASL interpretation and closed captioning will be available.

After each Art SPARKS session, you will be invited to respond to what you learned. Responses will shape the future of BEING Studio.

Art SPARKS is presented by the BEING Board of Directors with support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation's Resilient Communities Fund.
